Today marks one year since I launched this Substack.
When I look back, I see a lot of gaps, a lot of ideas that didn’t come to fruition, and perhaps a life that got in the way of creating more.
But I also look back with pride that I finally followed the advice I had long heard:
Just start it.
Because the truth is, the concept of American Sueño has lived in my mind since 2012. So many excuses stopped me from just doing it, just starting it, just going for it. As I look back at this past year, I’m so grateful that I have created a space to bring my thoughts on democracy into the world. Through this Substack and through my TikTok and Instagram page.
This article came out in the New York Times this week that really has me thinking about how important it is to create:
Right before our eyes we are being told what matters. What parts of history should be shared and kept. What we will learn about in our classes. Read in our books. Stories we will be able to check out from our libraries. What will be left behind as public record of this time. How quick it all can be erased.
But that’s where we all need to come in.
On this International Women’s Day, I want to encourage all to just start and figure it out as you go. Your voice is valid and we need it. We need your creativity. Your art. Your heart. Brashness. Boisterousness. Kindness. We need it all.
Sending you off with the trailer I created last year to remind you that we’re all still figuring out - this great big ol’ American experiment!
